Iceland: Land of Fire & Ice

Tromping around the lava field
outside our house.

Iceland was stunningly beautiful. Everywhere we looked, it took our breath away. The boys had a break in October, so we went to this wild and cold place that Colin had visited last year on a school trip. He wanted to show us the glaciers, water falls, and geysers that had impressed him so much.
The stunning view from our house across the fjord.
We were very lucky to have a friend in Iceland who owns a vacation home. They let us stay without charge, which was really helpful, as Iceland is extremely expensive!

Iceland has an amazing greenhouse farm that grows

tomatoes year-round. We stopped by to check it
out, and enjoy tomato soup, and tomato ice-cream!

We hiked about an hour to reach this spectacular geothermal stream. The water was warm but the air was
still cold.Good thing we had our beanies!

The kids were very excited to find American restaurants in Iceland. Mason had KFC for his 11th birthday. The only
other time he's eaten KFC was at the airport before we left the US this this grand adventure. Of course, they had
to have Dunkin' Donuts.

We got a flat tire! Our "total car coverage" that Mike paid extra for didn't cover flat tires. (It covers running out
of gas in the middle of nowhere.) So we all learned how to change a tire.

The view from our living room.
One night, we were able to sit in the comfort of this delightful house and watch the Northern Lights!

Basalt towers

We took a tour of a glacial ice cave. The cave is man-made. The glacier is not.
